Northern Illinois is home to Hononegah High School and the full breadth of its sport teams. In 2017, the inflatable dome that had served to house many of the school’s tennis and track sports collapsed, leaving the school without a facility for these teams.  In response, the school’s leadership worked with DLA architects of Chicago to design a new Fieldhouse, and DLA brought in Hamilton AV Design to figure out how to provide high quality sound reinforcement to the new facility. The new fieldhouse contains an indoor track, with one end of the facility doubling as a competition gym for the basketball team. Indoor tennis courts occupy the other end of the building inside the track. In support of the main competition space, there is a large weightlifting and strength training room along with a short sprint track. A facility as large and varied as this one provides a natural challenge in terms of sound design, volume, and control. To provide the necessary audio reinforcement for the entire facility, a distributed sound system was designed using QSC loudspeakers and amplifiers paired with Crestron control touch panels at key control locations throughout the building.  This design allows school officials to easily turn on and adjust different zones for the various activities and to route video to the displays in the lobby, training room, and support classroom as needed. Now completed, the resulting AV systems provide Hononegah High School with state-of-the-art technology throughout the facility—a solid sports and education foundation to build on for years to come!
