Repurposing Old Spaces for Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Through a 2022 bond initiative, Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School District undertook a major upgrade to its Career and Technical Education (CTE) spaces. The project combined the construction of a new Net Zero Science Building with the renovation and expansion of the Culinary, Fashion Design, and Interior Design programs in the school’s North Building.

HAV.Design partnered with DLA Architects to provide the AV systems that support these hands-on learning environments. The result is a series of purpose-built spaces that serve both students and instructors with reliable, easy-to-use technology.

The renovation was completed in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Transformed the old wrestling room and a classroom into new fashion and interior design studios.
  • Phase 2: Converted a former fashion space into a residential kitchen for instructional use.
  • Phase 3: Built out a full-scale commercial kitchen to support the school’s growing culinary program.

Each space was designed to balance daily instructional needs with long-term durability. HAV.Design integrated a professional-grade audio system featuring QSC 6.5″ ceiling speakers and Sennheiser wireless microphones to support demonstrations and group instruction. Visuals are delivered through LG 49″ LED displays and Christie Captiva ultra-short throw projectors, paired with projection-compatible whiteboards. Marshall overhead cameras and Extron touchpanel controls round out the system, allowing instructors to easily manage AV tools in real time.

These upgrades not only modernize the school’s CTE spaces, but also help students gain experience in industry-relevant environments—better preparing them for college and career pathways.
